Before the trail begins

A shorter program still needs a full preparation plan.

The approach, climb, and descent place different demands on your legs and equipment. Practice walking uphill and downhill with your agreed pack, and test your boots before traveling. Fitness and technical readiness both need attention.

Experience

Experience for this route.

Prior ice-axe arrest, cramponing, and rope-team travel skills are required. Tell Craig when you last used them. Arrange any needed refresher before the trip; do not assume the itinerary includes a course.

Equipment & travel

Equipment and travel.

Orizaba Express focuses on one volcano in 6–7 days. Discuss recent altitude exposure and the proposed acclimatization schedule before choosing it. The shorter duration does not reduce the alpine skills required.

No. Choose the 10-day Mexico Volcanoes program if you want to climb both Iztaccíhuatl and Pico de Orizaba.
